Shanghai's airports set Spring Festival travel records
Released:2026-03-20

Shanghai's two major airports handled record traffic during the 2026 Spring Festival travel rush, with passenger and flight volumes reaching historic highs. Shanghai Pudong International Airport alone surpassed 10 million passengers for the first time.

The 40-day travel period concluded on March 13, with Shanghai Airport Authority reporting 96,000 flight movements, up 2.3 percent year-on-year. Daily operations averaged 2,407 flights across Shanghai Pudong International Airport and Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport.

Passenger throughput totaled 15.738 million, up 5 percent from last year. Daily passenger flow averaged 394,000, with both airports repeatedly breaking single-day records between Feb 20 and Feb 22.

Pudong handled 10.099 million passengers, including 4.38 million international travelers, up 6.5 percent year-on-year. The surge reflects growing inbound tourism and strong demand for international routes during the holiday period.

Service upgrades enhanced the passenger experience, including one-stop security clearance, facial recognition boarding and millimeter-wave screening channels. Integrated transport coordination improved connectivity with metro, maglev and high-speed rail systems during peak return periods.

Inbound services also improved, with multilingual volunteer teams and one-stop service centers offering payment, transport and tourism assistance, supporting Shanghai's goal of becoming China's leading gateway for international travelers.
