Shanghai has introduced three new air-rail intermodal freight services to improve its airport cargo gateway, boosting speed, reducing costs and increasing connectivity for high-value, time-sensitive shipments at Pudong and Hongqiao airports.

Announced on Dec 16 by the Shanghai Air-Rail Intermodal Service Center, the initiative is jointly led by Shanghai International Port (Group) Co, China Eastern Airlines, Shanghai Airport Authority, China Railway Shanghai Group and China Railway Express.

Air-rail intermodal transport merges the global reach of aviation with the extensive rail network, offering faster transit than air-road alternatives and more cost-effective than air-air transfers, making it an ideal solution for e-commerce, express parcels, and premium manufacturing cargo.

The three products serve different shipment sizes. Scheduled high-speed rail serves small, urgent international parcels under 25 kilograms. Consolidated wagon targets mid-volume shipments under 50 kilograms with moderate transit times. Express freight train handles bulk cargo under one metric ton per item, efficiently supporting larger consignments.

With these services, cargo across the Yangtze River Delta can be delivered to Pudong and Hongqiao airports on the same day, facilitating complete terminal handling and quick connections to outbound international flights.

Since its establishment in January 2024, the service center has developed nine air-rail corridors linking Shanghai to cities including Hefei, Jinhua and Guangzhou. From January to November 2025, it handled a total of 1,460 tons of cargo, a 146 percent increase year on year, reflecting the rapid adoption of Shanghai's integrated air-rail freight model.
